The Hook Model describes a repeating cycle with four stages. An external or internal trigger prompts a minimal action; a variable but valuable reward sustains interest; and an investment of data, time, content, settings, or relationships improves the next experience and increases the likelihood of return.
Products such as Duolingo, TikTok, and Slack illustrate different versions of the cycle, from short lessons and visible progress to personalized content and accumulated team knowledge. The mechanism succeeds only when friction is low, the reward reinforces a real need, and the user's investment creates understandable reciprocal value.
The model also creates an ethical obligation. Habit mechanics that improve a person's life differ from retention loops built on dependency and loss of control. Product and engineering leaders should review trust metrics and user harm with the same seriousness as privacy and security rather than optimize only daily activity or retention.
